  • Terrytown GoldenAgers Senior Center Grand Opening

    Community members and elected officials recently gathered to celebrate the completion of the Terrytown Golden Age Center. The 3,900-square-foot facility, which cost just over $1 million, was funded by the Jefferson Parish Recreation Department and gaming revenue received from Boomtown Casino. The center includes several improvements and upgrades, including Americans with Disabilities Act compliancy, a 12-foot ceiling in the main area, an upgraded kitchen, new bingo boards, additional storage, a covered drop off, automatic doors on the front entrance and six handicapped parking spots.

    Terrytown Spring Fest started three years ago in the heart of Terrytown. The festival is hosted by TEDA (Terrytown Economic Development Association) and benefits local non profits. It is a fun time for people of all ages! For more information, go to

    Friends of Jefferson the Beautiful recently sponsored its 12th annual Tree School. The workshop addressed the importance of the care and preservation of trees in the urban landscape.

  • The American-Italian Research Library Grand Opening

    The treasure trove of oral histories, immigration records, notes, books, photographs and other artifacts chronicling the local Italian community moved from New Orleans to Metairie. The American Italian Research Library moved its collection from the American Italian Museum in the Central Business District to Jefferson Parish's East Bank Regional Library. The library includes naturalization records from 1800 to 1860 for Italian immigrants seeking citizenship in New Orleans, indexes of Sicilian church registries and copies of Italian newspapers such as La Voce Colonale, which was printed here. The collection also includes the complete works of Giovanni Schiavo, the pioneer of American Italian studies, and his hand-written notes, personal library and research material.
